Great British Energy is the UK Government's publicly owned energy development company, established to accelerate the deployment of clean energy, strengthen energy security and deliver long-term economic growth.
Headquartered in Aberdeen, Great British Energy is building a national institution that will invest alongside the private sector to mobilise up to £15 billion of investment over the next five years. Its mission is to accelerate clean power generation, strengthen UK supply chains, support skilled jobs, and ensure the benefits of the energy transition are shared with communities across the UK.
The Opportunity
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Chair to lead the Board of Great British Energy as the organisation enters its next phase of growth.
Working closely with the Chief Executive and Board, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, ensure effective governance, and help establish Great British Energy as a trusted, commercially disciplined and purpose-driven national institution.
This is a unique opportunity to shape one of the UK's most significant public energy organisations at a formative stage while supporting the transition to a cleaner, more secure energy future.
Key Responsibilities
Board Leadership & Governance
- Chair the Board and ensure effective governance, accountability and decision-making.
- Promote high standards of Board effectiveness, risk management and organisational oversight.
- Foster a collaborative, values-led and high-performing Board culture.
Strategic Leadership
- Lead the development and delivery of Great British Energy's long-term strategy.
- Ensure alignment with national energy policy and the organisation's public purpose.
- Support innovation in public investment and clean energy deployment.
Executive Oversight
- Work closely with the Chief Executive and Executive Team.
- Provide strategic guidance, support and constructive challenge.
- Maintain clear governance boundaries while ensuring executive accountability.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as the principal ambassador for Great British Energy.
- Build strong relationships across government, industry, investors, local authorities and communities.
- Promote confidence in the organisation and its long-term mission.
Culture & Public Value
- Champion a purpose-driven organisational culture.
- Ensure community benefit, sustainability and public value remain central to decision-making.
- Support Great British Energy's development as a nationally significant organisation headquartered in Aberdeen.

Essential Experience
- Proven experience as a Chair, CEO or senior leader within a large, complex organisation.
- Strong understanding of corporate governance and Board leadership.
- Experience providing strategic oversight and constructive challenge.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement across government, industry and investment communities.
- Outstanding communication, influencing and ambassadorial skills.
- Strong commitment to public service and long-term value creation.
Desirable Experience
- Experience establishing or scaling a new organisation.
- Knowledge of the UK energy, climate or regulatory landscape.

Remuneration
- £114,400 per annum.
Time Commitment
- Approximately two days per week.
- Regular Board meetings, stakeholder engagement and representation activities.
