About the Organisation

 

The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) is the UK's largest multi-profession healthcare regulator, overseeing more than 360,000 professionals across 15 health and care professions.

 

As a statutory regulator, the HCPC exists to protect the public by maintaining high standards of professional practice, education and conduct. With the launch of its 2026–2031 corporate strategy, the organisation is entering a significant period of transformation, regulatory reform and strategic development.

 

The Opportunity

 

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Chair to lead the HCPC Council during a pivotal period of organisational change.

 

Working closely with the Council, Chief Executive and Registrar, and Executive Leadership Team, the successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, ensure effective governance, and support delivery of the organisation's long-term strategy while maintaining clear separation between governance and executive management.

 

The Chair will also act as an ambassador for the HCPC, strengthening relationships with stakeholders across the UK and internationally while championing equality, diversity and inclusion.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Board Leadership & Governance

  • Chair the Council and ensure effective governance, accountability and decision-making.
  • Promote high standards of Board effectiveness and organisational leadership.
  • Foster a culture aligned with the HCPC's values and public protection mission.

 

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide strategic oversight of the organisation's long-term direction.
  • Support delivery of the HCPC's 2026–2031 corporate strategy.
  • Guide the organisation through regulatory reform and organisational change.

 

Executive Oversight

  • Work closely with the Chief Executive & Registrar and Executive Team.
  • Provide constructive support and independent challenge.
  • Maintain clear governance boundaries between the Council and executive leadership.

 

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Represent the HCPC with government, regulators, healthcare professionals and wider stakeholders.
  • Build confidence and trust across the healthcare sector.
  • Champion equality, diversity and inclusion throughout the organisation.

 

Candidate Profile

 

The successful candidate will bring:

 

Essential Experience

  • Significant Board-level leadership experience.
  • Experience chairing complex governance bodies or public organisations.
  • Strong understanding of governance, accountability and strategic oversight.
  • Experience operating within highly regulated or publicly accountable environments.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills.
  • Strong political awareness and sound strategic judgement.

Remuneration

 

  • £80,000 per annum.

 

Time Commitment

 

  • Approximately three days per week.
  • Attendance at Council meetings, committee meetings and stakeholder engagements, primarily in London.
