Overview of Need
The Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society (MCPS) is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director to join its Board as it continues to modernise its operating model and strengthen its position within the rapidly evolving music rights industry.
Representing over 42,000 music publishers, songwriters and composers, MCPS collects and distributes royalties across physical media, streaming, broadcasting, synchronisation and digital platforms. With more than a century of heritage and a forward-looking strategy, the organisation is investing heavily in technology, systems and data to support future growth.
This appointment will strengthen Board capability in digital systems, data management and technology governance, providing strategic oversight as MCPS evolves its service model and develops new commercial opportunities.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide independent challenge, governance and strategic oversight as a member of the Board.
- Support the development and delivery of MCPS' long-term strategy.
- Advise on systems, technology, digital transformation and data governance.
- Provide insight into systems integration, data security and commercial exploitation of data assets.
- Contribute to discussions on organisational risk, governance and future operating models.
- Attend Board meetings, committee meetings, the AGM and strategic events.
- Act as an ambassador for MCPS and support positive stakeholder relationships.
Ideal Candidate Profile
Candidates should have senior executive and/or Non-Executive experience and be able to contribute strategically within a complex governance environment.
They should demonstrate:
- Board or senior executive experience within technology, information, IP or digital businesses.
- Significant expertise in digital systems, technology and data governance.
- Experience overseeing systems integration and digital transformation programmes.
- Strong understanding of data management, security and commercial data utilisation.
- Strategic thinking with excellent analytical capability.
- Ability to provide constructive challenge while working collaboratively.
- Strong governance awareness and commercial judgement.
Experience within licensing, copyright, intellectual property or music rights would be advantageous but is not essential.

Time Commitment
Approximately 12 days per year, including:
- Six Board meetings annually
- One annual strategy day
- Committee meetings
- AGM
- Annual Rightsholder Meeting
- Various stakeholder and industry events
Remuneration
£53,000 per annum
Location
Board meetings primarily held in London with additional events throughout the year.
